Brisbane Replaces Infamous Riverwalk
One of the most dramatic scenes from last year’s Brisbane Floods was a huge section of the heavily used Riverwalk cyclepath being washed downstream at high speed. The long concrete and steel structure threatened to collapse the Gateway bridge downstream until a heroic tugboat driver was able to nudge it safely through the gap and out to sea.
Brisbane City Council recently announced that it will replace the missing section at a total cost of $55 million. The first $9 million will be spent in 2012-13 as part of a $25 million budget for cycling infrastructure.
