Lee Turner’s picks of what’s hot.
Rejoice! There are a plethora of innovative trends and cutting-edge technologies that promise to revolutionise our riding. From state-of-the-art apparel to customised bike components, the latest developments in the cycling world are designed to enhance performance, comfort, and style. Here’s a detailed look at the top cycling trends I believe will take centre stage this year.
The 2-in-1 suit
I have been riding 2-in-1 suits from Tineli for years, and I think they are great. Once only reserved for racing, we see more and more of these used in everyday riding. They are comfortable, easier to go to the toilet, and look PRO. I like that they are easier to hang on the line as well. The pros wear them because they are more aero, which we all want to be. I use them because they are comfortable and look and feel great on. They are sometimes cheaper than a bib and jersey, making them even more attractive.
Waxed chains
The cycling community is abuzz with the introduction of waxed chains, a game-changer in drivetrain maintenance. Unlike traditional lubricants, waxed chains offer superior performance by reducing friction, repelling dirt, and extending the life of your components. The application process involves treating the chain with a special wax formula that creates a durable, low-friction coating. This not only enhances shifting performance but also reduces the need for frequent cleaning and re-lubrication. A lot of bike shops now offer this great service. I like a waxed chain because it keeps it cleaner for longer. Once I get it waxed at my local bike shop, I use Squirt, a wax chain lube that works well and doesn’t gather dirt. It is very easy to use as well. With advancements in waxing technology, it’s now easier than ever to keep your drivetrain clean and efficient, making this trend a must-try for 2025.
Aero socks
Aero gains were reserved for bikes and helmets for years, but now socks are stealing the spotlight. Aero socks are engineered with textured fabrics and precise compression zones to reduce drag, offering measurable speed improvements.
Aero socks’ snug fit and compression properties also enhance muscle support and blood circulation, contributing to overall performance and endurance. What I like best about aero socks is that you can set your sock height when you put them on, and then you don’t have to touch them again; they just don’t move. You can pull them right up high or opt for a more old-fashioned lower height, and they will stay put and not move.
Custom paint jobs
In 2025, personalisation is king, and custom paint jobs allow cyclists to express their unique style on the road. My last five bikes have been a custom paint design, and I love it. I designed my current bike from scratch after learning Adobe Illustrator. From intricate designs to bold colour schemes, the possibilities are endless. This trend is not only about aesthetics but also about celebrating individuality and making a statement. There are quite a few custom painters out there. I personally always use Sun Graphics in Melbourne as its work is flawless. I just think you are riding your bike nearly every day. Why not have a design that means something to you and something you absolutely love? A lot of bike manufacturers’ paint schemes are conservative, so why not stand out from the crowd? Some bike manufacturers like Pinarello and Trek offer their own in-house customisation, but this also has some limitations to colour combinations.

Custom kits
Matching your bike isn’t enough anymore; your kit needs to make a statement, too. Custom cycling kits are taking off, with teams and solo riders alike designing apparel that reflects their personality, brand, or team spirit. With endless possibilities for colours, patterns, and logos, custom kits are a way to ride in style while standing out from the peloton.
The trend towards customisation extends to every aspect of the kit, from jersey and bib shorts to gloves and accessories. With custom kits, cyclists can enjoy a personalised fit that enhances aerodynamics and comfort, making every ride a pleasure.
I have been using Tineli for years, and when it comes to custom, I personally think they are the best. There are so many other great cycling apparel brands offering custom kits, including Champ Systems, Cuore, Babici, Santini, and Ventou.
One-piece bars
The rise of one-piece bars marks a significant shift in handlebar design. While far from new, I noticed how many riders were using them in last year’s Tour de France. When I got my new bike late last year, I got some Cadex one-piece bars, and I must say I love them. They are so clean, and the stiffness is incredible. These integrated handlebars combine the stem and bar into a single, seamless unit, offering improved stiffness, weight savings, and aerodynamics. The clean, minimalist design enhances the bike’s aesthetic appeal and provides a more direct and responsive handling experience. I’m sold!
Embracing the future of cycling
As we move through 2025, it’s clear that the cycling world is poised for exciting advancements. From versatile apparel to innovative components, the latest trends are designed to enhance every aspect of our riding experience. Whether you’re a competitive racer, a dedicated commuter, a try-hard like me, or a weekend warrior, these emerging trends offer something for everyone. Embrace the future of cycling and gear up for a big year of kilometres. Everyone loves new stuff so get on board.
