Road and gravel cyclists can be difficult people to buy gifts for at Christmas and the wider festive season, but the good news is that there are plenty of options. At Bicycling Australia, we see all the new gear coming through, so we’re well placed to share a few ideas that might help you find the perfect present.
Light your way

Bike lights are constantly improving in technology. They are becoming brighter and lighter, with more features, so it’s worth upgrading every few years. Having a backup light is also great if your original one fails.
Like the Knog light range that will keep the riders in your family safe this Christmas – designed in Melbourne since 2002 to be functional, durable, and super stylish, from bright taillights to 1400 lumen head lights, flashing lights to be seen and lights to see with, there is a Knog light for every cyclist from the casual urban commuter to the seasoned pro roadie. Available at bike shops nationally.

Or the Exposure Blaze ReAKT, which is uniquely shaped to help angle the lens directly backwards. ReAKT (Ambient Kinetic Technology) is the latest innovation that automatically adapts the light to conditions, flaring up to 150 lumens under braking or when entering brighter environments. Peloton mode allows the Blaze to dim when the light from the rider behind is detected.

A quality bike lock is a practical gift for every type of rider.

The Ergon BX3 EVO Backpack is perfect for long day trips. The BX3 Evo provides the ideal fit for riders of all sizes. Due to the self-adjusting carrying system, the equipment you carry always stays close to your body and remains stable in any situation. The pack features a well-designed layout and provides excellent ventilation.

Festive cycling kit
With cycling clothing known as ‘kit’, there are dozens of options in terms of both items and brands. Of course, there are jerseys and knicks (shorts) like this smart-looking duo from Bowy Active, but so much more. Wind vests, rain jackets, long sleeve jerseys, winter jackets, arm, leg & knee warmers, headbands, undershirts, and the list goes on. Most road and gravel riders who get out on the bike more than a few times a week need multiple of all of these items to stay warm, in fashion and safe.

Clothing can also be a safety item, like the Cycliq Lumiere Unisex Reflective Jacket. Designed with safety, comfort, and practicality in mind, it is the ideal outer layer for cyclists who ride early, late, or anywhere where light conditions change. Created in collaboration with Pedal Mafia, the Lumiere Jacket features a full-length two-way front zipper, a rear pocket that doubles as a compact storage bag and reflective panelling that ensures riders stand out on the road. Lightweight, packable and highly visible, it is a thoughtful, safety-focused gift that helps every cyclist be safe and be seen day or night.
And if you’re looking for a great Christmas option, consider the BA jersey in the very Christmassy shade of red.
The latest technology

Everyone loves a bit of tech under the Christmas tree, and there are loads of options here – cameras, drones, computers, power meters, indoor trainers and much more.
Cycliq’s range of safety lights incorporates a camera. You can’t put a price on peace of mind, and this Christmas, you can give the gift that holds bad drivers accountable. Cycliq’s bike cameras are the ultimate dashcam engineered for cyclists, delivering safety on every ride. The Fly12 Sport is Cycliq’s front-facing bike camera with integrated safety light designed to protect cyclists on every ride. Engineered for safety-conscious cyclists, the Fly12 Sport gives you peace of mind with continual smart recording and smart incident protection, ensuring the best and worst moments are captured. The powerful front light ensures you are visible on the road, and can be safe and be seen.

The new Fly6 Pro is an essential safety asset for all cyclists. With 100-lumen output for all conditions combined with a purpose-built 4K camera, the Fly6 Pro is your eyes behind. It is a practical, safety-focused upgrade that brings peace of mind to every ride, making it an ideal gift for any cyclist.
Handy pumps

Pumps make great stocking fillers too, and even if your rider has a basic pump, they may not have a mini e-pump. Mini e-pumps are all the rage at the moment, and we’ve reviewed a number of them at Bicycling Australia, including this popular Trek Air Rush Electric Pump. Other brands of e-pump to look at include Silca, Cycplus, Fumpa and Muc-Off.
Cool glasses

Every rider needs more than one pair of quality cycling glasses. And yes, you do need sunglasses that are specifically designed for the purpose. Sunglasses serve several purposes, including keeping the sun out, shielding eyes from insects, and keeping riders’ eyes safe in an accident.
But there are loads of options like these KOO glasses with Italian flair. Other brands you should look at include Rudy Project, BBB, Bolle, Tifosi, 100% Brand, Smith Optics, Oakley, and many more.

Gloves
Gloves are another great stocking filler, and like many other items, most riders need more than one pair. For summer riding, most road and gravel cyclists will favour short-finger varieties, while winter riding requires long-finger gloves. A sensible and safe option is black gloves, but a colourful pair like these from Velocio makes for a nice change.
Socks – the ultimate stocking filler

Socks might sound a little dull as a present, but they are the ultimate stocking filler, and every cyclist likes socks to match their favourite gear. Like many cycling accessories, it’s important that the socks are lightweight or specifically designed for riding, like these from Velocio. And don’t underestimate the importance of sock length.
