Gerry Ryan may call time on Jayco-AlUla backing next year

Gerry Ryan has indicated that 2027 could mark the end of his time backing the Jayco–AlUla and Liv AlUla Jayco setups, with the long-time patron of Australian cycling confirming in a podcast the end is near on his more than 14-year support of the World Tour teams.

Speaking on the Stanley St. Social podcast, Ryan said a departure was likely by the end of next year, pointing to both the length of his involvement and family considerations as key factors.

“I’ve been doing it for a long time, and my kids are a bit concerned about their inheritance,” he said.

“They like it when we’re there [at races], but they see their inheritance going out the door.”

In the wide-ranging interview, Ryan discusses many key milestones in the team’s history – including the 2013 Tour de France team time trial win, the bus-gantry drama, the teams’ 2018 Vuelta success and Giro heartbreak, the importance of Aussie DNA, and his broader sporting contributions.

Ryan has been central to Australian cycling for decades. His support dates back to the lead-up to the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, where he backed Kathy Watt, and later expanded into a deeper commitment that led to the creation of the GreenEDGE Cycling project in 2012.

That initiative delivered Australia its first consistent presence in the men’s WorldTour and later added a women’s team competing at the highest level of the sport.

However, the teams’ financial pressures also came into focus during last year’s WorldTour registration process with the UCI, when delays in securing a required bank guarantee raised questions about the its immediate future and underlined the cost of maintaining elite-level squads.

If Ryan does step away as indicated, it would mark the end of a 15-year era for GreenEDGE and leave a significant gap in Australian cycling.
