If you’ve ever wanted to know the story behind the man they call “the Voice of Cycling”, then you’re in for a treat – NBC Sports has shared a relaxed and highly watchable multi-part interview with cycling broadcasting icon Phil Liggett.
Across the conversation, Liggett reflects on a career that has stretched over five decades, covering the sport’s biggest races and most dramatic moments.
What’s most interesting is he believes his perspective is less about scripted lines and more about instinct, describing how he simply reacts to what unfolds in front of him on the road.
“I don’t hear a voice, I hear the race,” Liggett says, summing up the natural, in-the-moment style that has made him so recognisable to generations of viewers.
The interview also touches on how much cycling has changed over the years, from the early days of limited television coverage to today’s global broadcast environment.
Despite the evolution of technology, analysis, and race data, Liggett’s message is simple: the racing itself still tells the story.
So far, NBC have (bizarrely) only released part one and five on their YouTube, but we’ll update this article as the other parts come out.
