Remco Evenepoel Regains Giro Lead, Then Abandons Due To Covid

World Champion and leader of the Giro d’Italia Remco Evenepoel has been forced to abandon the first Grand Tour of the year after testing positive to Covid 19.

The shock news came soon after shortly after Evenepoel regained the lead of the 2023 Giro after blitzing Sunday’s 35km individual time trial.

“It is with a heavy heart that I have to announce that I will be leaving the Giro d’Italia due to Covid-19 after taking a routine test, which unfortunately was positive,” said Evenepoel.

Geraint Thomas is now leading the Giro. Primoz Roglic is second, while Thomas’s teammate Tao Geoghegan Hart sits in third.

The best-placed Australian is Jay Vine in 10th, some 3 minutes back.
