Brisbane is set host the world final of the popular six day track series, the Anna Meares Velodrome being the venue for the event in April next year as a part of the recently-announced Brisbane Cycling Festival.
The Six Day Melbourne and the Six Day Final in Brisbane are expected to attract the world’s best track cyclists when the internationally-renowned series expands to Australia. The events will be held on 7, 8, 9 February at Hisense Arena in Melbourne and 12, 13, 14 April at the Anna Meares Velodrome in Brisbane from 5.30pm.
Organisers say the Australian editions will be condensed to an “action-packed three day event with all the usual six day track racing formats including the madison, time trials, derny racing, team eliminations, scratch races and points races in a spectacular arena environment.”
Madison Sport Group CEO James Durbin said Six Day Australia will be a fantastic opportunity for emerging and established Australian talent to compete against the best in the world.
“With UCI points counting towards Olympic qualification up for grabs, the Six Day Series will attract the world’s best track cyclists to Australia next year,” he said.
“To secure their place at the Six Day Series Final in Brisbane, riders need to qualify through one of the earlier rounds in London, Berlin, Copenhagen, Melbourne or Manchester.
“The award-winning Six Day Series is a spectacle that Australian fans will love and to have the culmination of the Series as part of the Brisbane Cycling Festival is a great honour.
“We are extremely excited to launch ticket sales today and encourage fans to get in early to secure their place at the world’s biggest track cycling series.”
A combination of bikes, beats and beers, the Six Day Series takes a traditional form of cycling and mixes it with an exciting party atmosphere to form the ultimate sporting event.
