The long-awaited new Hammerhead Karoo cycling computer has been released and yes, the company have finally addressed the most significant negative associated with the otherwise outstanding bike computer.
Initially launching the Karoo, then updating it with the Karoo 2, the third generation Hammerhead reverts back to the simple Karoo moniker.
In launching the GPS computer Hammerhead have also unveiled their new Companion App, and yes … in the news we’ve been waiting for for years … route planning can be done between device and phone without the need for WiFi.
The new Karoo also features an impressive 15+ hours of battery life, quick navigation via pin sharing, easy route and workout sync, simpler ride uploads and live tracking.
The device has squarer corners, straighter sides and a forward slanting design. The mobile phone quality touch screen remains the same size at 3.2 inches. Internally there’s a faster processor, more memory, improved GPS and satellite connectivity and faster charging.
Hammerhead, owned by SRAM, say “the stunning screen, premium materials, and all-day battery life combine to make Karoo a cycling computer without compromise.”
“Easy to use in every condition thanks to thoughtful hardware and software design, Karoo allows you to focus on the road – and the ride – instead of your equipment.
“With comprehensive structured workout support, industry-best navigation, and a Companion App and Dashboard that let you manage your device without removing it from the handlebars; Karoo helps you hit your training goals, explore new routes, and enjoy every ride.”

It’s a No from me.
It’s an undeniably attractive unit and touch screen operation adds a new and much-needed dimension beside the time-honoured button pushing. But there is a major failing: a tiny 15 hour battery life is very poor compared to e.g. out of many, the iGSPORT iGS630/630S, or their just released, “Karoo Killer” iGS800 (50 hour battery life), never mind Garmin and Wahoo. Hammerhead is not concentrating enough on endurance level battery life, just features. Progressive updates will no doubt address shortfalls with the K3, but until then, alternatives exist and they pack a punch.
