LA VUELTA: Simon Yates Surges Past Breakaway To Solo His Way To Stage Victory

Simon Yates of Orica Bike-Exchange won the 163.2 km 6th stage of the Vuelta Espana in emphatic style last night, soloing his way to victory.

Timing his final kilometres with perfection, 24-year-old Yates caught Swiss rider Mathias Frank (IAM), the last remaining man out of a 11-man breakaway, to win on his own ahead of Luis Leon Sanchez (Astana) and Fabio Felline (Trek Factory Racing).

Here is Yates’ final high-speed kilometre of the stage.

With supurb team work and support from fellow Orica-Bike Exchange riders, Yates thanked his mates effusively.

”The team did some great work in the beginning and set things up really well for me,” said Yates. ”We wanted to go in there and try to make a hard race. There were lots of twists and turns in the finale, but I managed to take my opportunity and I’m very happy with the result.”

”The roads were pretty difficult there at the end but fortunately I timed my attack to perfection, it was a really hot day but it worked out very well for us in the end.”

The win moves Yates into tenth on the general classification with fellow OBE rider Esteban Chaves still in fifth place, 38seconds down on race leader Darwin Atapuma of team BMC.
