Meet Troy Robins – one of this year’s incredible Tour de Kids participants. During 2023, Troy set himself the challenge of cycling 1,500km on an unsupported journey from Perth to Exmouth in Western Australia. We asked Troy to share with us a bit more about his adventure, and this is what he had to say…
How many years have you been doing the Starlight Tour de Kids challenge?
This year will be my third year participating in Starlight’s Tour De Kids. My first-year goal was 1000km, second year was 1700km, and this year my target is 2023km – with a fundraising target of $5000!
Tell us some more about how you’ll be doing the challenge?
As part of my challenge this year I will be cycling 1500km unsupported from Perth to Exmouth in Western Australia on a fully loaded touring bike with all my required items carried on the bike. I have allowed 20 days for this trip and the remaining 523km completed once I return home. The plan is 100km per day with a couple rest days in Exmouth and a 18hr return bus trip!
Why did you sign up to do Tour de Kids?
I took up cycling 3 years ago after not riding a push bike since I was a kid. Now as an avid cyclist the excitement of being in the TDK Challenge gives me the opportunity to combine riding and raising awareness for the Starlight Foundation great work with sick kids.
Not only can I get fit but I can help others in the process, this challenge is such an awesome thing to do and I highly recommend anyone thinking about it to jump on board and the support from the Starlight Foundation and friends and comradery made through the portal and social media sites is excellent and makes me not only very happy but grateful to be part of something that brings such joy to others in time of need. I plan on many, many more years to continue!
