Van Vleuten Drops Chain, Still Wins Giro Rosa Individual Time Trial

Coming into Stage 5 of the twenty-eighth edition of the Giro Rosa, Boels-Dolmans maintain a strong lead with Anna van der Breggen up 25 seconds going into Stage 5.

Despite dropping her chain mid-way through the individual time trial, Orica Scott’s Annemiek van Vleuten ground her way to victory in Sante’elpidio a Mare on a course featuring two climbs with gradients reaching up to 20%.

Despite a misleading course profile, the Dutch Time Trial National Champion said she was confident coming into the stage and was very happy to take some time back on the GC.Screen-Shot-2017-07-05-at-10.45.43-am.png

“We had a really good preparation for this time trial,” said Van Vleuten in her team’s race report. “That was really good for my confidence going into this stage…I was super disappointed yesterday, but I managed to stay focused, and I know today was a chance to take some time back.”

Talking of her mechanic Pat Ryan, Van Vleuten said “he was able, while I was riding to jump out of the car and get to me and somehow managed to get my chain back onto the small ring costing him a small scar on his finger”. (Orica’s Backstage Pass)

Despite the minor mechanical, Van Vleuten clocked a time of 25:29, 41 seconds on Van der Breggen (Boels-Dolmans) and 1’15” quicker than Elisa Longo Borghini (Wiggle-High5).

Fastest Australian time went to Orica’s Amanda Spratt who finished 4th overall with a time of 27:17

Van Vleuten is now third overall with teammate Amanda Spratt moving up into 5th position.

There are five more stages in the Giro Rosa with the final Stage 10 featuringa criterium in Torre del Greco before a 6.4% climb on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius.
