Accomplished and much-loved Sydney cyclist Nick Sky has been remembered in a memorial ride that celebrated his life and contributions to the cycling community.

Nick tragically died after being hit from behind during a morning ride with Michael Collings at Belrose on June 4. Sydney newspaper The Manly Daily reported Nick Sky passed away in hospital ‘after a car driven by a 22-year-old man is alleged to have swerved into a bike lane.’

On Sunday July 21st around 150 riders gathered to pay tribute to 47yo Sky, the turnout being testament to Nick’s positive influence. Riders from numerous Sydney clubs and groups came together under the clear blue skies of St Ives north of Sydney.

Prior to a minutes silence, Nick’s son Lachie gave a moving speech that tugged at the heartstrings of all present. Friends shared stories about the Double Duffy’s loop, the route riders took on the day, and its significance to Lachie and his father.

“We learned about their Thursday routine, the friendly competitions between father and son, and the many sprints they shared on these roads,” recounts Angus Calder. “We also collected donations for the North Foundation, raising over $600 in support of the Royal North Shore Hospital ICU who looked after Nick.”

A Moving Tribute

The ride kicked off with Nick’s regular group, the Earlies, followed by six other bunches. Lachie led with the Earlies before gradually joining each of the trailing groups, offering his thanks to everyone who attended.

“After completing the Double Duffy’s, we all stopped by Tastebuds café in Terrey Hills,” said Calder. “It was a chance for us to come together, share memories of Nick, and show our support for Lachie. It was a fitting way to remember a great man and a day that truly honoured his spirit and love for cycling.”

“I would like extend a thank you to the Northern Sydney and Peloton Sports Cycling Clubs for organising the event. Nick was originally a member of Peloton Sports CC for many years, before transferring to Northern Sydney CC to support Lachie in his pursuit of an elite cycling career,” continued Calder.

“The cycling world is a close-knit community and the loss of one of our own is felt deeply. Our thoughts are with Lachie and his family as they navigate their future without Nick. We would like them to know that the cycling community comes together to look after their own and we will all be by their side throughout the journey.”
