Remco Evenepoel’s Dream Career Continues With Double Gold In Paris

Remco Evenepoel has made history winning the Olympic Road Race just one week after claiming the Individual Time Trial in Paris.

The first male rider to complete such a feat at the same Olympics, the double gold adds to the 24-year-old Belgian’s incredible career results to date.

Just think, after turning pro in 2019 Remco has enjoyed 58 victories, ridden five Grand Tours, the same number of classics, and stood on the podium at many of the world’s greatest races.

Adding to his Olympic Road Race & TT Golds in 2024, in the past few years he has –

  • Finished 3rd at this year’s TDF.
  • Won the Wollongong World Championship Road Race in 2022
  • Won the 2023 World Championship TT in Glasgow
  • Won the 2022 La Vuelta
  • Won LBL in 2022 and 2023
  • Finished first at the Classic of San Sebastian in 2019, 2022 & 2023

Perhaps his most heart-pounding and stressful race finish in Paris, Evenepoel was solo off the front when he punctured 3.8km from the Eiffel Tower finish. Desperately awaiting a bike change, the seconds ticked by as he waited for support.

The bike eventually arrived and the chase group were just moments behind. Remco jumped onto the new steed and blasted to victory for what has become one of the most iconic finish line images in modern history.

“It was a pretty stressful moment,” Remco later said. “One kilometre before, the race motorbike was alongside me and showed me that I had 25 seconds advantage.”

“This is the Olympics closest to my home,” he continued. “To be able to share this with the Belgians and all my friends and family is pretty special. Two golds at once is something I couldn’t imagine,”

What’s Next?

Evenepoel is scheduled to next race at the Tour of Britain. After that, it’s the 2024 World Road Championships in Zurich. The objective there will be to defend his Rainbow TT Jersey, and maybe even replicate his 2022 Road victory as well.
