Shimano Australia & ACCC Announce Details Of ‘Inspect & Replace’ Program

Shimano Australia have announced full details of a proposed local inspection program after a number of pre-2019 Ultegra and Dura Ace cranks failed under pressure.

The Shimano Australia statement reads:

‘SHIMANO Australia is issuing a voluntary inspect and replace program of select bonded 11‐speed HOLLOWTECH II road cranksets (produced before July 2019) for a possible bonding separation issue.

This will be implemented through an “Inspect and Replace” program in partnership with authorised Shimano Cycling dealers.

Not all Ultegra and Dura‐Ace cranks need to be inspected. Only cranks produced before July 2019 need to be inspected and we are providing information directly to consumers that allows them to both identify if their cranks are part of the program, and to inspect cranks themselves.

We believe with the resources and tools we are providing we will be able to implement this Inspect and Replace program quickly and efficiently. Our number one priority is consumer safety and your relationship with the consumer is critical to reach as many consumers as possible.

Inspect and Replace program summary timeline for Australia

September 29th 2023: Inspect and Replace Program announced to the public by the ACCC and Shimano Australia Cycling, we will launch the inspection program and ask consumers and dealers to inspect all Ultegra 6800, Ultegra R8000, Dura‐Ace R9000, and Dura‐Ace R9100 and R9100P cranksets produced before July 2019.
.
Week of October 16th to 23rd 2023: Access to Shimano Inspect and Replace app will be opened. This will allow dealers to enter and manage all information needed to log inspections. Replacement cranksets will be available for those that do not pass inspection at this time and shipping to dealers/consumers will commence.

Our priority is to ensure the safety of our consumers and we hope this information allows you to help us reach these consumers in a way that is favourable for them and our dealers.’
