A lightweight monochrome GPS computer with outstanding mapping and a solar panel, that’s the Trimm One Lite.
Trimm, a rising name in GPS bike computers, might not be a giant in the industry yet, but they are making waves. Their One Lite model is a surprisingly impressive little unit, a sleek design that’s as lightweight and minimalist as it is feature-packed. Weighing just 59g and less than 1cm thick, this monochrome non-touchscreen device offers both an old school look and feel but modern user experience.
Design and Features
The Trimm One Lite’s standout features include open-source mapping and a straightforward navigation system. While the absence of a touchscreen is a negative, the 3.2-inch, 200dpi resolution screen offers clear visuals and strong, impressive contrast.
The device also impresses with its route planning capabilities. With the assistance of the Trimm app, planning complex routes with up to 30 waypoints becomes a breeze. Utilising the OpenStreetMap system, the Trimm One Lite finds the most updated maps to guide you simply and without fuss.
A useful feature is its ability to suggest new routes based on current location, all without a mobile network connection due to offline caching technology. This would obviously be a huge bonus for bike packers, adventure riders or anyone heading off the beaten track.
Battery Life and Solar Charging
The Trimm One Lite addresses the common GPS / computer concern of battery life. Equipped with a small, remotely tethered solar panel, the device not only maintains its power but even replenishes it under the sun. During one of our test rides and with the device starting at 80 per cent, it charged to 95 per cent within three hours of direct exposure.
Connectivity and Compatibility
So far as connectivity goes the Trimm One Lite doesn’t disappoint. Bluetooth-enabled and compatible with smartphones, rear radar units, smartwatches, power meters, and heart rate monitors, it will integrate into most systems.
Apps and bike computers are symbiotic these days, and the app is certainly one of the brand’s major strong points. The ‘Planning’ screen makes on-the-go routing an absolute cinch. To the battery connection, there’s a proprietary magnetic plug that works well.
Quality & Pricing
Made in Korea, the Trimm feels well constructed, is rated IP54 water resistant, and has stood up well to our testing.
Negatives? The out-front mount bracket feels a little on the light side and the rubber bar spacers are fiddly – this is an area we think could be improved upon.
Priced at approximately $350 via overseas online retailers, some might question the cost for a non-colour, non-touchscreen GPS device. However, Trimm One Lite’s unique features, including its simple yet efficient navigation system and exceptional battery life boosted by solar charging, make it a strong contender in the market.
After a few weeks of testing, the battery life, navigation, integration with the app and easy-to-read monochrome screen impressed us the most. And that small, on-stem solar panel looks cool and works so well!
Quality
Made in Korea, the device feels solid, is well made, works well and seems a perfectly reliable and suitable GPS.
Performance
Screen resolution, operation, flipping between screens and navigation were spot on … battery life is exceptional!
Value for money
At around $350 the unit is similarly priced to similar-specced mid-level devices, but without the full colour screen. Battery life and solar and the simple Trimm navigation is the main point of difference here.
