She is one of the world’s most accomplished athletes and has now added yet another major award to her name. Anna Meares OAM has been inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame.
Meares is a 4-time Olympian and 2-time Olympic champion with 6 Olympic medals from Rio in 2016, London in 2012, Beijing in 2008 and Athens in 2004.
She’s a 11 time world champion across four different disciplines and a five time Commonwealth Games champion and was the flag bearer for the Glasgow 2014 Australian Commonwealth Games and the 2016 Rio Olympics where she was also the Australian Team Captain.
Along with the many Olympic, World, National and Commonwealth records, Meares is a 35-time Australian track champion.
Shortly after the Sport Australia announcement, Meares took to social media to write –
“It seems a lifetime ago now that I enjoy life with my partner Nick and our beautiful children, Ev and Bill; even though it’s only been 6 years since retiring from my cycling career.
Today it was announced that I along with 7 great others are inducted to the Sport Australia Hall of Fame
Even though I raced as an individual, I represented Australia, my communities and family.
It took so many people, so much support and backing to make it all happen. And while like then I won the medal and today am awarded one more, I’d like to thank the many who made it happen with me. Too many to name but you all know who you are.
Family, friends, sponsors, sports institutes and organisations and of course all of you who connected and followed along the way.”
Bicycling Australia congratulate Anna Meares. For more on her incredible journey you can read the various articles on this website.
